Description

EDIT: OMG I'm THRILLED!!!! I won Third Place in the judge's section :) First time ever I win something in a contest here on DA!!!!!! I feel like I've won an Oscar: I want to thank everyone!! the people who voted for me, in the judges' section AND in the popular section, those who faved and commented on this drawing, my Husband for his support and ideas and, mostly, the organizers of this awesome contest!! it was one of the coolest ideas ever!! (and now I feel like an idiot, just like when I played Winning the Emmy Awards, using my shampoo bottle as a trophy, when I was 10... but we all did, didn't we?)
woooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! and the prizes are awesome, too :)

Here is my entry for the Historical Disney Contest disney-club.deviantart.com/jou… held by Disney-Club disney-club.deviantart.com/

Tiana and Naveen in 1928, coming out of the cinema, where they watched "Steamboat Willie"!!

If you're interested by the Historical context and background, feel free to read this further... if not, then thank you so much for looking at this drawing! I've thought about it a lot before getting started, and put tons of love into my work, I hope it shows :)

Idea:
When I first read about this contest, I was so happy!! I'm a History Nerd, and a Disney Fanatic... so it was like... beyond cool :) The trouble was: during the 1st two weeks after the contest had been announced, I had hundreds of ideas, and none at the same time... bits and pieces of thoughts, but nothing was clear enough, or good enough...
Then, one evening, I was a bit ill, comfortably cuddled in blankets, while my Honey was cooking and I told him: "you know, for the contest, I've had a few ideas, but nothing really inspiring, it frustrates me a lot..." ..."okay, tell me, maybe I can be your muse" was his answer... so I told him I wanted 2 things: a happy drawing (Disney is magical for me, I didn't want to make people and/or myself sad with it) and an event taking place at the characters' time and place (this option was the most appealing to me... dunno why, it was rooted in my brain like that... maybe that's because I love so much when story meets History in books and movies). So we explored a few tracks from the ancient Greece to the 1980s, but still nothing... then Honey said: "could Tiana and Naveen have gone to see "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"?" I was halfway through answering "nah, they're from the Twenties, and Snow White is too late, it was in 38..." when I shouted "Steamboat Willie! that's it!"
After a double-check to be sure "Steamboat Willie" came out in 1928, I was so excited about this idea it made me smile during the whole evening :)

The Cinema: For the building, I used as reference a picture I took in 1998 of an old cinema from the 1920s. This cinema was near Jackson (MS)... but I can't remember where exactly...

The Movie Poster: I simply googled it, and then used the original poster as a reference... It was weird to draw an "old school" Mickey... really. As for "A Sensation in Sound and Synchrony", it's a comment I've read several times in various places (books, websites, ...) whenever they were talking about the movie when it came out...

Clothing: I had a look at three History books I have at home and which are about the "Roaring Twenties". Then, keeping in mind the general shapes and lengths, I let my imagination work... Of course, for these two, green seemed pretty natural... I guess if I had found my true love while being a frog, I would have grown fond of the color...
Funnily enough, when I was coloring Naveen's trousers, I remembered my granddad (who was born in 1920) used to wear the same trousers in shape and color all the time... this made me smile :)

Segregation: A friend, visiting me the other day and seeing my drawing, told me "but I thought black people couldn't go to cinemas or theaters before the fifties"... so I thought, if other people think like her, maybe it's useful to explain this a bit: Segregation in the USA during the Twenties meant that "colored" (official designation at the time) people were officially "separate, but equal"... so they had separate seats (the bad seats, generally) and sometimes separate entrances... but indeed, they could go to the cinema... I'm not judging the way it was at that time, I'm simply explaining things to avoid misunderstandings,...

made with:
Lining with Wacom Bamboo Tablet + Manga Studio
Coloring with Caran d'Ache Classicolor pencils + various other pencils

what else? well, if you were patient enough to read all this, you are really brave, and you deserve many thanks, hugz and tons of llamas!!!!

Edit 15h later: I was definitely not happy how the colors came out with my scanner (too cold), so I took a picture of it instead... this way the colors are more like the original drawing :)
